The Japan to UK car import process

Importing a car from Japan to the UK involves five distinct stages. We handle each one and keep you updated through your reservation tracker.

1. Source & purchase

We buy at Japan auctions (USS, TAA, Aleado, JU, ZIP). Our agent in Japan physically inspects the car and grades it against the auction sheet before we bid.

2. Shipping

Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) for road-legal cars, container for high-value or non-running vehicles. Typical Japan to UK transit: 5-7 weeks.

3. UK port arrival

Cars land at Southampton, Tilbury, or Bristol. We clear customs (HMRC C384/NOVA), pay import duty and VAT, and store the vehicle until ready for inspection.

4. Type approval & MOT

Cars over 10 years old can be registered without IVA. Newer cars require an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) test through DVSA.

5. DVLA registration

We submit V55/5 with NOVA reference, type-approval certificate, and proof of insurance. The car is issued a UK reg and V5C log book within 4-6 weeks.
